The Department of Biochemistry, Integral Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (IIMSR), under the aegis of Integral University, successfully organized a seminar on the occasion of National Protein Day on 28th February 2026 at the Multipurpose Hall, IIMSR.
The seminar aimed to promote awareness regarding the importance of adequate protein intake and its vital role in maintaining health and preventing diseases, particularly among MBBS First Year students.
The program was conducted in the gracious presence of Dr. Roshan Alam, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, along with other esteemed faculty members. Dr. Alam extended his support and encouragement to the initiative, emphasizing the importance of nutritional education in medical training.
The session commenced with an introductory address by Dr. Aisha Beg, who highlighted the significance and historical background of National Protein Day. She elaborated on its observance on 27th February and addressed the growing concern of protein deficiency in India, underlining the need for increased awareness about balanced and quality protein consumption.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Darakhshan Khan (Junior Resident-II), Department of Biochemistry. She provided an in-depth overview of the biochemical and physiological roles of proteins, including their structural, catalytic, transport, regulatory, and immunological functions. The session also covered essential and non-essential amino acids, nitrogen balance, protein metabolism, and recommended dietary allowances across different stages of life.
Clinical correlations such as protein-energy malnutrition, sarcopenia, impaired immunity, delayed wound healing, and metabolic stress were discussed to provide practical insights. Special emphasis was laid on affordable and accessible protein sources suitable for the Indian population, including pulses, legumes, dairy products, eggs, soy products, nuts, and lean meats.
To reinforce learning, an interactive Multiple-Choice Question (MCQ) session was conducted, focusing on key concepts related to protein structure, metabolism, dietary recommendations, and clinical implications. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, making it both engaging and academically enriching.
The seminar concluded successfully with active involvement from students and faculty members, reinforcing the importance of nutritional awareness and highlighting the role of future medical professionals in promoting evidence-based dietary practices within the community.
