“Educating Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through Redesigning Curriculum in Social Sciences”

(3rd DEC-16th DEC, 2024)

Description of PDP Theme

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the world’s best plan to build a better world for people and our planet by 2030. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, the SDGs are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich, and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the environment. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, equality, and job opportunities while tackling climate change and working to preserve our ocean and forests. The SDGs also known as Agenda 30 aim at transforming the lives and livelihood of the people across the globe. The Agenda remains the world’s roadmap for ending poverty, protecting the planet, and tackling inequalities. These seventeen SDGs are the cornerstone of the Agenda which offer the most practical and effective pathway to tackle the causes of violent conflict, human rights abuses, climate change, and environmental degradation and aim to ensure that no one will be left behind.

The SDGs reflect an understanding that sustainable development everywhere must integrate economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection. Curriculum development can align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating sustainability-related themes, concepts, and learning outcomes across subjects and grade levels. This is known as Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). “Education for Sustainable Development allows every human being to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to shape a sustainable future. Education for Sustainable Development includes key sustainable development issues in teaching and learning; for example, climate change, disaster risk reduction, biodiversity, poverty reduction, and sustainable consumption. It also requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behavior and take action for sustainable development. Education for Sustainable Development promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios, and collaboratively making decisions. Education for Sustainable Development requires far-reaching changes in the way education is often practiced today”
