Ripples in Spacetime: An Expert Lecture on Gravitational Wave Astronomy

It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that the Departmental Quality Assurance Cell (DQAC), Department of Physics, is organizing an expert lecture titled “Ripples in Spacetime: How Humanity Learned to Hear the Universe" aligned with SDG 4 and 9.

This lecture will highlight one of the most remarkable scientific achievements of modern physics—the discovery of gravitational waves, first predicted by Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity. Long considered nearly impossible to detect, these minute distortions in spacetime were successfully observed in 2015 using highly advanced instruments. This breakthrough has given rise to a new field of astronomy—gravitational wave astronomy—enabling scientists to explore extreme cosmic events such as black hole mergers and neutron star collisions in an entirely new way. This development represents decades of dedicated research and global collaboration, transforming our understanding of the universe and providing humanity with a new “sense” to observe the cosmos.

In this context, we are pleased to announce the details of the expert lecture as follows:

Topic of the Expert Lecture:
Ripples in Spacetime: How Humanity Learned to Hear the Universe

Resource Person:
Prof. Shakeb Ahmad
Department of Physics,

Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh

Prof. Ahmad is actively engaged in research in the field of Nuclear and Particle Physics (Phenomenology), focusing on understanding fundamental interactions and the structure of matter at its most basic level. His scholarly contributions have been widely published in reputed national and international journals, including Physical Review Letters, Physical Review C, Physical Review D, Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics A, Nuclear Physics B, Physics Letters B, and European Physical Journal A, among others.

Date: 6 April 2026
Time: 10:30 A.M. onwards
Venue: Hall 2 (Central Auditorium Building)
Mode: Offline (Face-to-Face)

We cordially invite all faculty members and students from every course to attend this enriching lecture.
