Earthquake-resistant or aseismic structures are designed to protect buildings to some or greater extent from earthquakes. While no structure can be entirely immune to damage from earthquakes, the goal of earthquake-resistant construction is to erect structures that fare better during Seismic activity than their conventional counterparts. According to building codes, earthquake-resistant structures are intended to withstand the largest earthquake of a certain probability that is likely to occur at their location. This means the loss of life should be minimized by preventing collapse of the buildings for rare earthquakes while the loss of the functionality should be limited for more frequent ones. To combat earthquake destruction, the only method available to ancient architects was to build their landmark structures to last, often by making them excessively stiff and strong.
In this regards an awareness program at Bhahamau Gram Panchayat, Kursi road, Block /Tehsil- Lucknow, District-Lucknow was held on 21st October, 2017 organized by the Department of Civil Engineering, Integral University Lucknow. The faculty coordinators for the program was Mr. Tabish Izhar. Students of B.Tech Civil Engineering actively participated in the event. A camp was arranged near the well of village. A total of 190 students participated including those from other departments.
Students elaborated the villagers about the earth quake resistance techniques that can be in small houses in rural areas and this is most often done at small-scale. It is a simple, low-cost technique that requires minimum specific expertise or knowledge and offers many benefits. Further students also made the villagers aware of the safety precautions and earthquake mitigation techniques that should be employed whenever the situation arises. The students also visited various houses in the village to create awareness about importance & methods of earthquake resistance buildings.
