Furniture matters to interior designers in the same way that books matter to students to enrich their academic knowledge of the domain. It is important because interior design is concerned with the design of spaces, and what makes those spaces as direct attribute is furniture.
Department of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, Planning & Design (FoAPD) has successfully organized an interactive Workshop of 7 days on “Furniture Design” starting on 21st March 2023 for the students of 1st & 2nd year of UG program with a special focus on B.Design (Product and Interior Design).
The workshop started with the welcome and introductory address of Prof. Zeba Nisar, Dean of Department of Architecture followed by Dr. Safiullah Khan, Head of Department of Architecture. They highlighted the importance of furniture design and emphasized its scope & purpose in the field of Product and Interior Design. They briefly discussed how furniture is selected based on its function, space planning, and impact on room circulation, and investigated the design terms like anthropometrics & ergonomics with the students.
The purpose of this workshop was to resolve the designing and planning of furniture for interior spaces that fulfill all kinds of human needs. It is also intended to stimulate students to teamwork. They were distributed in separate teams with equal numbers of 5 to 6 students each and were asked to design the concept of a chair with a model and then a detailed drawing of the same with the detailed model. A jury was held in presence of the Dean, Head and other faculties of the department and the certificate with a medal was distributed to the 1st, 2nd & 3rd winners. A participation certificate was given to the rest of the students.
The workshop was successfully conducted with wonderful resource persons such as Mr. Noor Alam Khan, Mr. Mohammad Fahad Aslam, Ms. Sidra Sabahat, and Ms. Sabeeha Haq who made the event interactive, productive and meaningful.
The workshop closed with the vote of thanks by Dr. Safiullah Khan, Head- Department of Architecture and convenor of the Workshop. He expressed thanks to the resource members for sparing their expertise, University authorities, and Dean of Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design for their valuable direction, management, and support.
