Value Added Course on “Medical Writing”

The Department of Pharmacy, organized a 10 weeks Value Added Course on “Medical Writing” conducted between 22th October, 2022 to 24th December, 2022.The course was designed for UG, PG, Masters & PhD students. 102 Participants from various Departments like Bioscience, Bioengineering, Allied Sciences and Nursing have been enrolled in the course.

Medical writing is required for regulatory purposes and publication writing for medical communication or promotion and continuing medical education. Medical writing is the discipline of writing scientific documents. Medical writing includes writing different types of documents for different purposes, and for different audiences. Medical writing involves writing scientific documents of different types which include regulatory and research-related documents, disease or drug-related educational and promotional literature, publication articles like journal manuscripts and abstracts, content for healthcare websites, health-related magazines or news articles. The scientific information in these documents needs to be presented to suit the level of understanding of the target audience, namely, patients or general public, physicians or the regulators. Medical writers require an understanding of the medical concepts and terminology, knowledge of relevant guidelines as regards the structure and contents of specific documents, and good writing skills. They also need to be familiar with searching medical literature, understanding and presenting research data, the document review process, and editing and publishing requirements.

Keeping this in view, the current online course was designed to give the learners foundational coursework on Medical Writing for both undergraduate and postgraduate level programs. With this course, the enrolled candidates had received conceptual knowledge on basic aspects of medical writing with specific emphasis on Clinical document.

This will help to understand basic concepts of medical writing, Literature search, and guidelines associated with Scientific document Publication.

The course was proposed by Prof. Syed Misbahul Hasan, Dean, Faculty of Pharmacy and Dr. Tarique Mahmood, Head, Department of Pharmacy and was conducted by the coordinator of course, Dr Md Akbar, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy.

The students attended the online training session with dedication and enthusiasm. There was one hours of interactive training session every Saturday & Sunday through Google meet along with the Quiz of each session. The distribution of e-Certificate was based on student’s attendance, performance and attainment of minimum qualifying marks, which is 50%.
