The Department of Ophthalmology, Integral Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (IIMSR), observed Glaucoma Awareness Week from 8 to 14 March 2026 under the global theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World.” The initiative aimed to raise awareness about glaucoma, widely known as the “silent thief of sight,” due to its asymptomatic progression and potential to cause irreversible vision loss if left undetected.
A series of awareness and outreach activities were organized both on campus and at the Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC), Sarvodaya Nagar, Lucknow. Key activities included awareness lectures for MBBS 2021 and 2023 batch students, glaucoma screening camps, and free drug distribution for patients attending the Eye OPD. Additionally, a dedicated awareness camp was conducted at UHTC to extend outreach to the community.
The programme aligned with the objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, emphasizing preventive healthcare and early diagnosis.
The week-long observance was successfully conducted and effectively contributed to enhancing awareness about glaucoma and the importance of regular eye screening for early detection and prevention of vision loss.
